Staying Safe Outdoors in Autumn and Winter

31st August 2022

The positive impact of outdoor space on our physical health and mental wellbeing is well documented. Fresh air and nature, along with physical exercise whether gentle or more energetic, makes an invaluable contribution to improved mood and better sleep. Time spent outdoors can reduce the risk of depression and help to maintain or even improve levels of mobility. Despite all these positive benefits however, the autumn and winter months can bring a tendency to avoid gardens and outdoor spaces, not only due to the weather but also to the higher risk of slips, trips and falls.

Here are some of our top tips for staying safe and enjoying your garden beyond the summer months:

  • Switch off water connections, features etc to reduce risk of frozen water overspill causing ice underfoot.
  • Pack away or secure freestanding items such as garden furniture, BBQs, trampolines etc which may be lifted and cause damage in the event of high winds.
  • Consider adding an outdoor handrail if any areas of your garden are more challenging in cold and/or wet weather – uneven ground, raised terraces, steep slopes and steps can all become considerably more hazardous in bad weather. You might also find a handrail helpful in high use areas, for instance if you regularly need to access a washing line, garage or shed.
  • Remove natural debris such as leaf fall which can become slippery and treacherous in wet weather.
  • Consider installing lighting so you can continue to enjoy your garden into the evening or on darker days and in shaded spots. Alternatively, consider a small light that comes on automatically with movement or keeping a reliable torch handy if you only rarely venture into your garden after dark.
  • Wrap up warm with plenty of layers and solid footwear with a good grip.

Even the best maintained gardens can prove challenging during winter months, particularly for the older generation and those with mobility issues. Uneven ground, decking slippery with ice, steps and slopes to and from different areas can all pose an increased risk during the winter months.

At The Handrail People we design, fabricate and install a range of products in wrought iron and mild steel to suit all homes, tastes and budgets. From simple grab rails to assist with climbing a single step or two, to handrails running the length of a garden path or driveway, as well as balustrades providing both increased safety and an attractive feature element to your garden and raised terraces. Our products can also be coated to a colour of your choosing, allowing them to blend in or stand out in their surroundings depending on your needs and preference.
